About Lead, Seed & Feed Program
Our flagship initiative, the Lead, Seed & Feed Fresh Produce Delivery Program, has transformed a vacant lot into a vibrant community garden, serving as a safe space for children and families in a high-risk neighborhood. The program’s mentorship model connects seniors with young participants, who grow, harvest, package, and deliver fresh, nutritious produce to local residents free of charge.
By cultivating unique vegetables not available in local stores, this initiative addresses food insecurity and promotes healthier living, particularly in the Black community, where access to fresh produce is limited. Participants gain leadership, responsibility, and self-confidence while engaging in the entire food cycle.
The garden fosters intergenerational learning, with seniors sharing life lessons and farming knowledge, while offering a peaceful, fun environment for the community to connect with nature. In a neighborhood marked by blight, it serves as a beacon of hope, providing both education and play in a nurturing space.
This initiative not only enhances food security but also contributes to the broader vision of building a sustainable, health-conscious community. It exemplifies how grassroots efforts can drive positive change and support global sustainability and food security goals.
Mission
Our mission is to transform vacant lots into vibrant gardens through a community-driven mentorship model, where seniors impart farming principles and life skills to the youth. This initiative empowers young people to harvest, package, and deliver fresh produce to local residents free of charge, fostering a cycle of leadership, responsibility, self-confidence, and community stewardship that cultivates shared prosperity.
Vision
A city transformed by vibrant, living classrooms where gardens are not just plots of land but intergenerational hubs of learning, growth, and community empowerment.
Our theory of change
Transforming vacant lots into community-driven gardens fosters intergenerational bonds and empowerment, providing a sustainable way to bring fresh produce to underserved neighborhoods.
The Problem
A FAMILY’S INCOME LEVEL REMAINS THE 1# PREDICTOR OF THEIR ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD AND THEIR RISK OF OBESITY AND CHRONIC DISEASES IN ADULTHOOD (1).
Among children aged 2 to 5, obesity affects 16.5% in Hispanic and 11.6% in black communities, nearly double the 9.9% in white counterparts; early childhood access to fruits and vegetables is critical, as it can dramatically reduce the risk of obesity later in life (2).
Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is crucial for preventing chronic diseases and improving overall health (3). Yet, in many low-income and minority communities, access to these nutritious foods is limited, with convenience stores often replacing supermarkets. This lack of access not only undermines health but also deepens socio-economic disparities, as these communities face higher risks of diet-related illnesses (4).Our Solution
We believe that access to fresh vegetables and knowledge about healthy living is a right, not a privilege determined by one's income.
The Lead, Seed & Feed Fresh Produce Delivery Program brings this conviction to life by transforming a vacant lot into thriving garden of organic produce. In this green space, seniors mentor the youth, sharing farming principles and life skills, creating a full-circle community engagement.
The younger participants play a key role in this ecosystem; they harvest, bag, and distribute fresh produce directly to the door steps of seniors and neighbors, all at no cost. This direct action bridges the gap in fresh vegetable access within low-income communities, completing a cycle of giving and receiving. The program goes beyond meeting immediate nutritional needs, fostering hands-on agricultural education, which empowers the youth to become tomorrow's problem solvers and leaders.
Driven by volunteerism and community collaboration, the Lead, Seed & Feed initiative stands as a powerful example of how collective effort can forge healthier, self-sufficient communities. Here, we are not waiting on the world to change; we're changing our corner of the world, one garden, one child, one community at a time.
What Makes Us Unique
The Lead, Seed & Feed Fresh Produce Delivery Program stands out as a pioneering force in community-based sustainable agriculture and education. Here’s what sets us apart:
Intergenerational Mentorship
Unlike traditional community gardens, this program uniquely bridges the age gap by facilitating mentorship between seniors and youth. Elderly community members impart not just gardening skills but also life wisdom to younger generations, fostering a deep sense of respect, continuity, and shared community heritage.
Direct-to-Door Harvest Delivery At No Cost
The program goes beyond growing food; it directly involves the youth in the distribution process, delivering fresh, organic produce right to the doorsteps of local residents at no cost. This hands-on approach ensures that the benefits of the garden reach the community directly, enhancing food security and building strong bonds among neighbors.
Comprehensive Community Empowerment
The program is not just about producing food but about cultivating leadership, responsibility, and self-confidence in young participants. Through active engagement in every step of the gardening process, from planting to distribution, it empowers participants to become proactive community members, driving sustainable change and fostering a culture of mutual support and resilience.
In essence, the Lead, Seed & Feed Fresh Produce Delivery Program is transforming the way communities think about food, education, and sustainability. Our unique approach is nurturing a generation of informed, connected, and empowered citizens, ready to lead their communities toward a healthier and more sustainable future.
